For BBC’s Research & Development identity system, we zeroed in on “Datacards” as our driving concept. Datacards are visual codes that describe and celebrate projects, people and places that make up BBC R&D. The modular system creates distinctive visuals that help viewers understand and navigate BBC’s research across digital and physical applications. We delivered a browser-based visual editor, which BBC’s team can use to generate various kinds of visual marks within the identity systems. It is based on elements such as data card type, research focus, location, standard iterations and so on.
My specific contribution was developing patterns for the Research Focus portion of the brand. Based on the understanding of each focuses and learning from the clients, I created and prototyped generative patterns using graphic shaders and WebGL technologies - It is a unique creative process and we believe this matches up with the technology-driven heritage of BBC R&D. As for one another important delivery on the project - the browser-based visual editor, I worked with Toby and co-built the web application for the clients.
